Tiff Does A Review: Hairplay Salon @ Publika

Herru! Annyeong! Hai, apa khabar!? Ni hao ma?

So, I did it!! I went to a salon around Publika called Hairplay. Hairplay is a hair salon business ventured together by two talented individuals who are well known in the TV/Media/Beauty industries in Asia. Marion Caunter is a popular tv personality/celebrity in Asia, known as being the main female host of the E! News Asia TV show while Shaun Yap is her personal hair expert, a renown hairstylist in Malaysia, whom also runs the salon and manages his hair expert team.

Here is a picture of me with Shaun and Kim who tended to my hair.
First and foremost, I would like to explain the type and condition of my hair. I was not born with the usual Asian hair that most of us are known for. I do not have the silky, smooth and straight hair. Each strand of my hair is fine, soft and wavy, sometimes, it gets extremely curly, but it falls out to a wavy, loose curl. I don't know how I got the hair texture that I have, but I guess it's due to my various kinds of ethnicities in my family history. (I honestly have not figured it out yet! My family and relatives don't even know either!)

So, let's start the story of my full hair color process at Hairplay!

I was welcomed by their receptionist who was a sweet woman. She ushered me to my station and asked if I wanted any beverage to drink. There's this cool machine that they have of all types of hot beverages, ranging from jasmine green tea, green tea, hot chocolate, coffee to cappuccino and etc.

On my first day, I chose the jasmine green tea, of course!

Then, I was greeted by my colorist on that day. His name is Kim. I will let the pictures do the talking. Bleaching isn't a fun process, a lot of time taken and a lot of damaged done (to hair and wallet! lol!) But, it was all part of the process. I've started dying my hair with bleach ever since I was 14, so I am used to the whole shabang and the shock value to see my hair gone to super platinum yellow is fine by me! My scalp is like a rock, there was a minty sensation but I am used to bleach.
I was late for a lot of errands needed done at work, so, I had to stop halfway and go to work with YELLOW bleached hair. I was at the salon since 10am - 3pm! Yowza! I was told that I would probably make it on time, but I guess I should've gone to the salon where I would need to clear all plans in my schedule for that day!
Then, the next morning, I went to the salon again, requested a regular cup of cappuccino, let Kim handle the rest of the process and TA-DA! After he added the color in- my hair color is now complete!!!
What I do not understand in KL would be how difficult it is to find a salon that washes bleached hair with purple shampoo to get rid of the copper/brassy color off of the bleached hair. So, I'm left with the copper undertones which can be seen under the sun. I do not like this at all though, but I have to make do with what I have now.

This is the process of using the purple shampoo to neutralize orange/copper tones to bleached hair:

However, if you were to see my hair in person, you would see that my hair looks ashy greenish brown. I wanted hair that has absolutely no traces of coppery, yellowy and brassy undertones. I would prefer something that has a more beigey/ashy brown base color.

It was my first time at Hairplay and I would say OVERALL I am happy with their service. They were patient, sweet and have that 'never give up' type of character. The ambience of the salon is very modern yet relaxing. So, I am very pleased with almost everything.

I do hope to find a salon that won't leave me with copper hair though! I just don't want to look like I have copper hair in pictures while underneath the sun or when the flash is on. Without the flash, it can look fine but it all depends on the lighting too (^__^)//
Thank you, Shaun, Kim, Linda and the receptionist for their hospitality and great service!

Love,
Tokki Tiff
